In the New York Store - Call 212.730.8138 for more info Art Blakey's 18/12/14" Pearl Drum Set
SOLD to Steve. I decided to buy this one for myself and for the history. I didn't want all of Art's items to be sold and not have something for myself and also something to show forever in the shop. So, I am buying this little 12/14/18. I enjoyed playing it so much that I couldn't resist it, and it's got the Art Blakey vibe, so how can you not love that! When I am not using it the set will be on display for all to appreciate.
See Steve's video of this drum set HERE. The drum set we have available was owned by the late Art Blakey. This instrument was given by Art to his son, Art Blakey Jr., who was also a drummer. Art Jr, passed away in 1988 at the early age of 47, two years prior to the passing of his father, Art Blakey Sr., in 1990 at age 70.
This set has been in the possession of Art Jr’s widow since his passing in 1988. We are pleased to be able to assist her in brokering this and other items in this collection of rare and significant drums and cymbals. The following item is currently available:
Pearl 8x12, 14x14, 14x18 gold wrap drum set:
This item is a Pearl fiberglass shell drum set from the 80s and consists of an 8x12 tom, 14x14, floor tom, 14x18 bass drum. The drums are wrapped in a solid gold color wrap which is factory correct. This set is part of the large set used for the DVD “Jazz at the Smithsonian: Art Blakey”, recorded in 1982. On that session these three drums were the core set and were accompanied by additional toms (8x10 and 9x13) as well as a 16x16 floor tom. It is not definitively known which snare drum was used for this session and it is not easily determined by viewing the DVD. The 8x12, 14x14, 14x18 core set is available. The existence of the remaining 8x10, 9x13 and 16x16 used for the session can not be verified and they are assumed to be lost. However, the core be-bop configuration that Art was famous for still exists in the 8x12, 14x14, 14x18. These drums were given to Art Blakey Jr by his father, Art Blakey. They have been preserved by Art Jr’s widow since Art Jr. passed away in 1988. A copy of the DVD is included with the set.
